ROAD WARRIORS: Travels with Mr. Shmooze: This week... Greenville!
Article Date: August 21, 2006
On a trip to Greenville last week (8/11/06), I had the pleasure to see
the city with the Mr. Shmooze of Greenville, Mr. Howard "Champ"
Covington, Jr., of Covington/Tutman Properties.
But
first thing's first. Greenville is a great city. It has the
charm of a southern small town, but with the amenities of a big
city. If you have a client dinner, I suggest Rick Erwin's West
End Grille (located at 648 South Main Street, 864-232-8999). The
environment, the food, and the service are the same high caliber you'd
find in any reputable New York steakhouse. Rick's place offers a
large wine list, and for an after-dinner drink and a cigar, the bar is
a great place to visit (http://www.rickerwins.com).
If you have
the opportunity, check out the Greenville Drive, Greenville's minor
league baseball team (Class A). Games are played at West End
Field -- a state-of-the-art mini-Fenway Park. Tickets range from
$8.00 for box seats to $5.00 for lawn and deck seats
(http://www.greenvilledrive.com).
One thing that South Carolina
(as well as North Carolina) has an abundance of is golf courses.
Champ (Covington) treated me and a couple of pals to a round of golf at
The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course.
When it debuted on April 27, 2005, Walnut Cove made history. It
is the only course in the history of the PGA Tour to open in
tournament-ready conditions. For the past two years, this course
has been the home of the BMW Charity Pro-Am.
Paul Henriksen is
the Head Golf Professional for The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, and he
oversees one of the best golf operations staffs I've encountered
anywhere. Paul leaves nothing to chance when planning your
perfect round. He'll introduce you to Dave, a former PGA pro, who
gives you the ins and the outs of the course to help you play your best.
Perhaps
the only negative about the course is that it's private. So call
up all your friends, contact old high school and college buddies to
find out who's a member, or if you're fortunate enough to have the
funds, simply join (check out http://www.cliffscommunities.com/golf).
I
seem to be on a roll in my travels. I once again had some down
time and located a spa that I enjoyed. The River Falls Spa is
located (130 South Main Street, 864-240-2136) next to the Westin
Poinsett in downtown Greenville. Lauren Skelton is the
owner. She will make your time at her spa extremely relaxing and
fun. Since Lauren is a perfectionist, she's happy when her
clients are happy (http://www.riverfallsspa.com).
If you haven't been to Greenville in a while or ever, I suggest you visit. It is a special city!
